After Gender? Examining International Justice Enterprises

Since 1982, the Pace Law School has hosted a yearly event, the Dyson Distinguished Lecture series.  This year's title is After Gender? Examining International Justice Enterprises. The Pace Law School will welcome Janet Halley, Royall Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, and an impressive group of exciting moderators, panelists, and commentators, as they all engage in a series of conversations about international law, sex, gender, and sexuality.

This one-day conference will explore contemporary thinking about gender in international law.  Traditionally, international law's gender analysis focused on women to the exclusion of other sexes.  More recent efforts to understand the complexities of gender in the international arena, including those in international criminal law, the United Nations, and other international organizations, have attempted to move toward a broader understanding of gender identity.  Do these efforts continue to rely on the exclusive centrality of "women" to understand "gender?"  If so, what are the costs to gender-related projects, if any?

This event is scheduled on November 12, 2010 at 9:30 am and will be held in the Judicial Institute Lecture Hall on the Pace Law School campus. For more information, email plr@law.pace.edu.

The lecture will be available online in real time here.

Sunny Schwartz, Author Of "Dreams from the Monster Factory," At Pace

The Pace Law School is holding its Nineteenth Dyson Distinguished Lecture, Can Prisons Make Us Safer?: Restorative Justice and Criminal Justice Reform, on Monday, January 25th, 2010 at noon in the Lecture Hall of the New York State Judicial Institute. The featured speaker is Sunny Schwartz, Esq., Program Administrator at the San Francisco Sheriff's Department and founder of the Resolve to Stop the Violence Project (RSVP).

Sunny Schwartz has just written a highly acclaimed book, "Dreams from the Monster Factory," about her experiences working with inmates in the San Fransisco jail system.

In 1997, discouraged with this country's contemporary approach to 'rehabilitation' for inmates, she launched the Resolve to Stop the Violence Project which draws upon the philosophy of Restorative Justice to bring together victims and offenders.

RSVP unites diverse community organizations and individuals to collaborate on the first-in-the nation correctional program offering services to everyone harmed by violence: victims, offenders and communities. - Sunny Schwartz, Esq.

Cornel West at Pace Law School

Pace Law School was honored to have Cornel West, Class of 1943 University Professor at Princeton University's Center for African American Studies, deliver the annual Dyson Lecture on April 16. Dr. West spoke to a packed house in the Moot Court Room on the Age of Obama. He was insightful, provocative, and inspirational. The video is available here.

Pace Law Professors David Dorfman and Randolph McLaughlin taught a seminar on the work of Dr. West as a champion of social justice to seventeen Pace Law students this semester. They were in the audience, as were many Pace Law students, faculty, and staff along with members of the public.

What struck me most about Dr. West? Watching him talk to the people who approached him before and after his lecture--he gave his full attention to each person, even if it was just for a short conversation.
